Vasilios Baltzopoulos is a Professor of Biomechanics and the Head of the Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Sciences (RISES) at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). He is also the Associate Dean for Research and Knowledge Exchange in the Faculty of Science. He completed his PhD on knee biomechanics at the University of Liverpool where he was appointed as Lecturer in Biomechanics in 1990. He is a BASES Fellow and has extensive experience of research quality assessment having participated in the Research Assessment Exercise of UK Universities in 2008, the Research Excellence Framework in 2014 (REF2014) and in REF2021.His main research interests are focused on the biomechanics of the musculoskeletal system and has research links with various companies in the sport and healthcare sectors. His research team have unique expertise in using an innovative combination of modern imaging techniques that include X-Ray video, MRI and ultrasound for studying in vivo muscle-tendon and joint function and mechanical parameters such as moment armsc and dynamic conditions. He has published over 120 papers with a Citation Index of ~11400 and an h-index of 61 and authored several book chapters on muscle and joint function. He has supervised over 40 PhD students and is a member of the Editorial/Advisory Board of various journals including Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology (Biomechanics), European Journal of Applied Physiology and Consulting Editor of the Journal of Biomechanics. He is the author of several book chapters and the author of the Isokinetic Dynamometry section of the BASES guidelines for biomechanical assessment and the lead author of the recent BASES expert position statement on assessment of muscle strength with Isokinetic Dynamometry.
